What are the program requirements?
Embark applicants must have 2-7 years of work experience. In addition, you must submit an application and receive acceptance into the Program, then make a commitment to attend all scheduled classes. We strive to ensure the makeup of our programs represents the diversity of our city.Embarkers come to us from all industry segments, including public and non-profit organizations. We are looking for applicants with diverse perspectives, leadership potential, and a passion to better themselves and their community.
What's the time commitment?
The program consists of seven evening classes over the course of four months. Each class is 3 hours in length. The total number of hours spent over the course of a 3 month period is approximately 25 hours.
What are the upcoming dates for Embark classes?
There are two cohort start times each Spring beginning in January and two in the fall beginning in August. All Embark classes meeting during the evening on either Tuesdays or Thursdays.
Where are the program classes held?
The first class takes place at the New Memphis office. Each class thereafter is held at a different location around Memphis. You will receive a schedule at the first class.
How many people are in each cohort?
The average number of diverse participants in each cohort is 30. We offer two cohorts in the Spring and two in the Fall. Embark is an exclusive opportunity for the best and brightest, and space is limited.
What happens if I'm not accepted the first time around?
We receive a lot of interest in Embark. Because of the high number applicants, we cannot accept all qualified candidates. However, we encourage you to re-apply if you aren't accepted the first time. We offer 4 cohorts a year.
Is each class mandatory?
Full participation by each member of an Embark cohort is key to the group's cohesiveness and crucial to the individual Embark experience. As such, attendance at every class over the four month program is expected.
How do I stay connected to Embark?
Post-graduation, we’ll make sure you have plenty of opportunity to remain part of Embark. New Memphis offers alumni exclusives in our monthly alumni newsletter as well as programming and events to continue your development and activate in our community.
How much does the program cost?
While the actual value of Embark is over $2,000 per participant, we only collect a $450 administrative fee that is often covered by your employer. We do not want this fee to prevent any qualified applicants from participating and have built ways to support paying this amount. Please reach out to bridget@newmemphis.org to discuss these options.
